The KeFRI Walk is Just Right
It is only expected that the Kenya Forestry Research Institute would have a forest in which hikers can enjoy some down time. It is also expected that the place would be simply breathtaking. However, when numerous research institutes come together to create and take are of a space then it is nothing short of stunning. There are several options for hiking near Nairobi, the KeFRI Walk is as good as it gets. It is a short distance away and offers options for a quick walk or a long challenging one.
Key Attractions
You might think that there is nothing to see in a field of trees. Truth is, it is less about seeing and more about feeling. It is about the feeling you get when you walk among the trees in a forest that is both natural and manmade. It is about the peace that comes from invisible singing birds. About the serenity of the whistling wind. It is about the sense of joy that overwhelms you when you hear branches break under the pressure of your weight with every step you take. Then you get to the part that houses clusters of bamboo trees. You take a break and pose for pictures. For a moment, for a brief moment, you feel like you belong. In that moment, very little else matters, your smile is genuine. What started as a simple experience hiking near Nairobi becomes more.
Challenge Level
The Kefri trail is generally beginner friendly but can challenge even veterans in the rainy seasons. Much of hiking near Nairobi is either easy,however the KeFRI Walk varies. You can only walk the easy and short part of the trail. This is especially handy if you brought the kids and their bikes with you. You can also take the entire cycle which of course take a lot longer and is a bit more challenging.
Logistics
The central meeting point is on the benches near Bata Hilton Nairobi CBD. From there, we head out to take public transport to Zambezi. The journey to the starting point is about an hour long. The cost of transportation is approximately Ksh 200.
The trail is also self-drive friendly in case you don’t want to take public transport.

- Backpack
- Snacks such as nuts, granola bars, fruits, fresh juice,
- 3 Litres of water (bring a reusable water bottle or a hydration pack)

Yes. KeFRI Walk is a child-friendly trail for children above 10 years. It’s a beginner hike where you can bring your family with you for a fun-filled weekend.
