Nthenge Njeru: The Gem of Embu

The name elicits childhood visits to the grandparents. You think about all the shenanigans you got away with while playing with your cousins from upcountry. You think about the love and subtle lessons from the elders in the village. Nthenge Njeru Falls is the reward on one of the most picturesque hiking trails in Kenya. It is a gem that sits beautifully in the countryside. This is the kind of place that summons you and you cannot help but enjoy it.

Key Attractions

  • The trek starts on a charming village rough road. This will prepare you for a rustic yet refreshing experience that very few hiking trails in Kenya afford hikers.
  • Then you will proceed to walk through a forest of indigenous trees among other vegetation. Walking in the Kirimiri forest is the stuff of fantasies. It is beautiful and dense enough without being imposing. You know there are animals but you are not afraid that a big one will jump out at you.
  • This walk will lead you to the Nthenge Njeru Falls. The falls are not a sight you are prepared for. The sound of water thundering down from the mountain is almost deafening but peaceful as well. It is an out of body experience standing there in the full glory of the falls.
  • If you are adventurous enough, you can enjoy a swim and wade through the mist of the water from the falls.
